DEVOTION Day 1, September 24, 2009
The sailors were terrified when they heard that Jonah served the God of heaven and earth, for he had already told them he was running away from Him.
“Oh, why did you do it?” they groaned. And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, “What should we do to you to stop this storm?” “Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.”
At this point, Jonah is getting the point and is starting to feel really bad about running away from God. But the sailors don’t want to throw him overboard. That’s crazy! In this storm?
Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it. Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God. “O Lord,” they pleaded, “don’t make us die for this man’s sin. And don’t hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.”
I think the sailors started realizing that there was no use fighting against God. They came to understand that God probably had reasons for trying to get Jonah’s attention. Why should they also fight God? It’s Jonah’s problem, isn’t it?
When we choose to disobey God, others may pay for that choice. Do we really want to hurt others by saying NO to what God asks of us? Let’s make a point to say YES to God so that others benefit from our actions and don’t get hurt by them.
Prayer:
Dear God – Please help us to say YES to your instructions so that others can benefit from our actions and not be hurt by them. Help us to follow you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
