DEVOTION Day 2, September 25, 2009
It took the sailors some time to figure out that they didn’t want to get involved in Jonah’s life. He very obviously was supposed to be doing something and God wasn’t too happy about Jonah disobeying. The storm was not letting up, so they decide to do as Jonah suggested.
The sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once! The sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power, and they offered him a sacrifice and vowed to serve God.
If you ever think that God might lose an opportunity to do something in the world when you run away from Him, don’t worry. God can do anything at any time. Can you imagine a raging storm, the boat swaying from side to side, maybe water is pouring into the boat – BUT then it is completely calm and still when Jonah touches the water? I can imagine the boat sailing peacefully away with Jonah just floating in a glassy sea.
God showed his power to these sailors without Jonah’s help. They know they couldn’t put Jonah back in the boat, because just as the sea was calmed in a moment, so could it get stormy again. They just have to leave him there with God and sail away, awestruck by God’s great power.
Prayer:
Dear God – We know you can do anything. Please continue to be working in the world and showing who you are to people even though we don’t always obey you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
