DEVOTION Friday, October 2, 2009 Day 1

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. ~ Matthew 5:6,8

Pull out your school yearbook, magazine or just a picture of you and your friends. Then flip it upside down. Have you ever done this? Now stare into the eyes of those upside-down faces. After a while, foreheads become chins and chins turn into pointy cone-heads. Girls have bushier beards than most guys. Kids are bald and bald men don’t have beards. Smiles look like weird frowns and you can see down everyone’s nose.

The interesting part is that if you look at them long enough, these strange upside-down faces begin to look kind of normal.

The world is like your upside-down yearbook. Things that should look bizarre start to look acceptable. Actions we should recognize as evil begin to look good: Bullies who scare money out of smaller kids get free lunches, cheaters pull good grades, and the loose girls get the cute guys. The rebels, instead of God’s friends, look like the ones who are happy.

Jesus’ teaching was aimed to turn things right side up, to display how God sees the world.

  • The people who show mercy will be happy, because God will show them kindness.
  • Those who want to do right will be happy because God will satisfy them.
  • The pure will know God.

Even if this world is upside down in the worst way – with people insulting you, hurting you, and lying behind your back – God’s way is best. Sooner or later, he will make things right side up.

Prayer:

Dear God – Help me to show mercy when I feel vengeful, to do right when faced with a decision, and to think and do pure things. Thank you for your promise to satisfy us, show us kindness and know us like a friend.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
