Devotional Day 3, Thursday, October 15, 2009
Mr. Radcliffe owned a wood mill where I used to buy my lumber for building projects. He was in his mid-80’s, living out his retirement years in the historic Ozark Mountains.
Whenever I dropped by to buy lumber, I’d stop and chat with Mr. Radcliffe. We spent hours visiting together. Once, I asked the savvy old character where he went to church. He raised his white, bushy eyebrows, stomped his worn, black boot, and scowled.
“I’ll never go to any ol’ church!” he said gruffly. “ Thirty years ago, some folks from that church down the road bought some lumber from me and cheated me out of my money.”
Mr. Radcliffe quickly changed the subject, but his words stuck with me.
What use was that church and all their beautiful hymns and prayers if they didn’t show kindness to this old lumberjack? What good are Bibles in a home if they’re not read? What good is a big savings account if it’s not used for people in need? What good is a smile that’s not shared? What use is a hug or an “I love you” that’s not given? What use is faith if it doesn’t produce fruit?
James 2:14-17
What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
a) What does faith look like when it’s producing fruit?
b) Why does James say that faith is dead if it’s by itself?
c) Whom do you know to connect his or her actions with faith?
d) Have you put faith into action by loving a needy person? If so, describe the experience. If not, keep looking for opportunities to lend others a hand.
Prayer:
Dear God – If we say we have faith, our actions should show it. Help us to serve others and show kindness. Help us to think before we speak and act so we encourage others and not hurt them. Thanks for your grace; we’re still learning.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
