Devotional Day 1, Wednesday, October 21st , 2009

“She’d be cute if it weren’t for her ears, “ her Dad teased.

“Did you know that when you call Allison you have to pick which ear you want to talk to? Here ears are so big they’re in different area codes.”

They all laughed. Allison didn’t. But her dad was on a roll.

“We’re thinking of taking up wind-surfing,” he grinned. “We won’t need sails.”

Allison faked a smile and got up to refill her soda, then hid in the kitchen popping popcorn for her guests. Finally she told her friends she had homework to do and left to hide in her room. Allison wished her dad would shut up.

His parents are anxiously waiting for him to walk through the door. He was supposed to be home an hour ago. Where is he? Mark usually calls if he’s late. We shouldn’t have let him go out with Nathan.

When Mark gets home, he sees the lights on, and finds his dad pacing the living room and his mom nervously clenching the latest issue of O magazine. If he had been home on time, he may have appreciated their waiting up for him. But tonight, he’ll probably get angry when his parents ask why he was so late.

Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters. ~1 Timothy 5:1-2

When people get out of line, whether they’re our parents or our friends, it’s tough to know what to do. When we don’t honor the rules that our families have created, it can also be tough to know what to do. Most people understand the idea that you have to earn your respect by showing respect. In both of the above stories, someone isn’t showing respect to another. And unfortunately, those people will not be respected. Allison is losing respect for her father because of his so-called “jokes”, while Mark’s parents are losing respect for Mark each time that he shows up later than he promised.

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us to do to others what we want them to do to us. Help us to be respectful if we want others to respect us.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen

People who respect others become leaders that are well-respected.
