DEVOTION Monday, October 26th, 2009 Day 4

Remembrance Day isn’t too far away and we’ll be thinking about Peace and what it means. We do this every year. Mennonite Central Committee uses a slogan “to remember is to work for peace.” Peace-makers – people who dedicate their lives to promoting peace and building bridges – know what it means to be respectful. There are some students in our class right now that are peace-makers: they are quick to make wrongs right and encourage people around them to get along.

As we talk more about respect this week, let’s take today to think about Preserving and Protecting our classmates. To Serve and Protect, when typed into Google will provide you with about 18 million hits about movies, police departments, complaints, trials and you tube videos. Police have a tough role of willingly stepping into a position that puts them face to face with people who want to push the limits of society. A police officer’s job is to Serve the people by Protecting them from these rule-breakers. Some see police as only reactionary: they drive around, waiting to respond to an emergency. But police officers do a lot in the community as well. They seek to educate citizens in order to minimize the amount of offenders in the future. They are not just serving, but preserving peace.

Respecting each other means we have to be at peace with each other. Preserving relationships and protecting others means you respect them. And if you respect them by being peaceful at school, they’ll also be peaceful and we’ll all make this a respectful school community. The Bible has a lot to say about peace and living in harmony with each other. It’s not my idea.

Turn away from evil and do good. Work hard at living in peace with others.

~ Psalm 34:14

Prayer:

Dear God – Respect – we all ask for it, but we don’t give it to others as much as we should. Just as David writes in Psalms, help us to “work hard at living in peace with others.”

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
