Devotional Day 1, November 6th, 2009
I’ve been a Christian for three years, and I’m the only Christian in my family. Over the past three years, I have faced a lot of challenges that have strengthened my spiritual life. I’ve been encouraged as I’ve handled each situation with God’s help.
Now I’m in the middle of overcoming more obstacles: for the last four months, my parents have been fighting, and my dad has been threatening to leave us. School is tough, and I’ve been getting in a lot of trouble. I’ve been failing most of my exams. I feel alone; I have no one to talk to. My friends always seem too busy, and when I’ve prayed, I’ve felt as if no one was listening – as if God doesn’t care about what’s happening in my life. I have felt empty when I prayed, even though I seem to need God the most when I’m in these difficult situations.
But recently I decided to change the way I pray. Instead of telling God all my problems, I have started telling him that he’s awesome and thanking him for all the good things in my life I can think of. I’ve started to worship God, even though I don’t always feel like it.
Since I’ve been praising God like this, something has happened in my spirit, and I’ve gained a new perspective. Instead of focusing on all the hard things in my life, I’ve begun to focus on the many ways God blesses me each day.
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
~ Jeremiah 29:13
Some times are hard for a reason. These challenges have strengthened my character and have taught me how to persevere when things are rough. With each challenge, God gives me a chance to grow and learn.
Prayer:
Dear God – You’re the giver of good gifts. Remind me of your goodness and the many ways you bless my life. Help me to remember your blessings and to thank you for all you give me.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
