Trust and Wait

Psalm 130:5 ~ I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.

Stillness filled the cabin of the inbound 747. We were en-route from Seoul, Korea, to Hong Kong. Over Okinawa two tropical storms that had been in divergent paths began to merge. Air traffic had been suspended from Okinawa hours before when tropical storm Holly hit. Now with back winds extending 400 nautical miles out to sea, Holly’s perimeter was joined by the sudden shift of tropical storm Gerald moving northward. We were in the middle of the pincer. The captain warned us that the last miles would be the roughest. No one was reading, no one was sleeping, no one was talking. There was silence in the cabin as we anticipated the slam of the jumbo jet into the high winds of the storms.

And we waited. Each minute passing was almost an announcement in itself. We were that much closer to land. Rain sleeted against the plane windows. Lightning cut across and around us. But we missed both storms and landed without a quiver.

Our lives are often like that plane ride. We wait, we anticipate, and we hope. The psalmist knew it. Sometimes the storm hits, sometimes it doesn’t. Our task: trust and wait.

Prayer:

Dear God – Thank you that when storms threaten me I can wait and trust, and in your Word, I can put my hope.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
