Joy-full
- ~ Habakkuk 3:18
At the time when Habakkuk wrote his book, it appeared that evil had triumphed in the world. Babylon was becoming the dominant world power and Judah would soon feel Babylon’s destructive force. The city of Jerusalem was under siege. They might run out of food. He was troubled by what he saw and had a lot of tough questions that weren’t getting answered.
“Habakkuk began with a list of questions [for God] and ends with a psalm of praise. His question and answer session has made the difference. He’s learnt to stop fretting about the future and trust God. The strumming prophet has a new outlook on life. He’s going to face up to the tough times ahead with new hope. Instead of demanding immediate answered he’s patiently going to let God work things out. Even if he starves when the city is under siege he’s still going to praise God. Why is he so positive? He’s learnt that God is his Savior. His future is safe with God. He knows that God is Sovereign. He’s going to be OK because God is in control. No figs, no grapes, no olives, no beef, no mutton, no food – no matter how scary the future, Habakkuk knows the Lord is his strength. God will supply his needs.
God doesn’t promise to unravel all our problems but he assures us we can trust him. Like Habakkuk in Jerusalem under siege, sometimes we can feel surrounded by problems – everywhere we turn there are difficulties. Without God it would be easy to cave in. But when we have a God to save us – a God who’s in control – we can rejoice.” We can be full of joy.
Prayer:
Dear God – Life is more than our worries and circumstances – life can be lived fully when we know you. Help us to go beyond our unpleasant daily experiences to the joy of knowing You.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
by Adrian Enns, quotation by Paul Thompson, YP’s, 2002.
