Grade 11 Computer Science

Term 3 Blender 3D Games and Animation

We are now nearing the end of term 2. The student work has been very impressive. They have shown a wide variety of talents both artistically and programatically. We are working on a way to display some of this work on our web site. More information will be forthcoming.
Next Tuesday Feb 14 we will be having a test. It will be on Blender and the details are found below. It involves a spaceship and scrolling land beneath it:

1. Make the terrain appear to scroll left to right. Use the “addObject” settings to do this.
2. Make the ship shoot with the spacebar.
3. Make an asteroid appear randomly using an Empty.
4. If t the shot hits the asteroid increase the “Score” by 10.
5. Have the score appear in the “Score” plane using the “Text” property.
6. Scene 2 make it rain monkeys.

Blender has been a lot of fun to teach. This grade 11 class is awesome. They are creative and work hard.
Here is an outline for a test scheduled for Wed May 25 Day 5.
  1. Place different objects on a scene – cube, plane, sphere etc.
  2. Give this object a color or texture also via the UV texture panel. (2 sided)
  3. Make an object dynamic, static etc.
  4. Using the F4 panels – make the object move with arrow keys.
  5. Set up a scoring system using the Debug properties and an HUD.
  6. Collect objects for points (collision/ near).
  7. End an object when hit.
  8. Open a door via IPO.

Term 2 Flash Grade 11 Computer Science

As we start Term 2 we leave Visual Basic behind and turn our attention to Flash. Flash is a program used for 2 and 3 dimensional animations. We will be dealing with 2-D only.
Beside the artistic side of Flash - creating the scenes using imported and drawn graphics we will learn some more advanced ActionScript2 programming codes.
1. Our first project is to create a Mario World style platform game. This involves code to enable the character to jump, land, change
      directions etc.
2. Using some physics codes we will see how objects can move in different directions while being affected by gravity, wind and other forces.
A mini putt golf course with at least 3 different holes might be used here.
3. The students will also be creating a "room" game. The program will involve creating multiple rooms that the player must find and enter.
They  will then have to accomplish a task in each room in order to advance to the next room.
There will not be any testing before Christmas.

Computer Science Grade 11 - Beginning Projects

This is a list from my own personal collection of projects that we will be doing in Term 1.

1.
Hudson’s Memory Game Grade 11 Visual Basic
2. Book Sales ( From Chapter 3 in textbook.
3. Deal or No Deal

The above projects have been completed. Next we will turn
our attention to :

4. Hawkzie (Yahtzee). I have created a good part of this game.
The students will have to figure out the rest of the code
     based on code already given.
5. Wall Ball – a starter file only. This is just a game concept.
I will be challenging the students to complete the basic
game and then to brainstorm in groups to take the
     game to more advanced stages.
